How to calculate plate calculator

Loading a barbell means splitting the weight above the bar evenly across two sides, then working out which combination of plates gets closest to that per-side figure. This calculator gives the per-side target and how far a real plate set can realistically land from it, using the standard Olympic plate set (25, 20, 15, 10, 5, 2.5 and 1.25 kg) rather than asking which plates are on hand.

Per side weight is simply (target weight − bar weight) ÷ 2. Loading it with a greedy algorithm means starting with the largest plate that still fits under the remaining weight, subtracting it, and repeating with the next-largest plate until nothing meaningful is left. Worked example at the default 100 kg target with a 20 kg bar: weight per side is (100 − 20) ÷ 2 = 40 kg. Greedily, the largest plate that fits is 25 kg (40 − 25 = 15 kg left), then 15 kg (15 − 15 = 0 kg left) — so 40 kg per side loads exactly as one 25 kg plus one 15 kg plate, two plates per side.

Reading the result

Weight per side is what actually needs to go on each end of the bar. The difference figure shows how far the nearest achievable loading (rounded to the nearest 1.25 kg increment per side) sits from the exact target — a value of 0 means the target is exactly reachable with standard plates, while a nonzero value shows the unavoidable rounding gap for an awkward target weight.

Where this goes wrong. Not every target weight is exactly achievable with a standard plate set, because the smallest plate is 1.25 kg — anything that does not land on a 2.5 kg total increment (1.25 kg per side) gets rounded to the closest reachable value, shown in the difference output. This calculator also assumes a fixed bar weight from the dropdown and the standard plate set rather than a custom bar or a smaller home-gym plate inventory; either of those would shift which combinations are actually available.

A useful check on any unfamiliar result is to compare it against a rough mental estimate first — round the inputs to convenient numbers and see whether the calculator's answer lands in roughly the same territory. A wildly different figure usually means one of the fields was entered in the wrong unit, most often a percentage typed as a whole number where a decimal was expected, or the reverse.

The three listed options (10, 15, 20 kg) cover the standard bars in general use — a full free-text bar weight field was left out to keep the calculator to a single explicit choice rather than an open-ended input, since almost every gym bar matches one of these three.

The difference output assumes the full standard set including 1.25 kg plates is available. Without the smallest plates, the achievable rounding step is larger (typically 2.5 kg or 5 kg per side), so the real-world gap to the target weight can end up larger than the figure shown here.

It returns weight per side. With 100 kg target weight, that comes to 40 kg. Change any field and the figure moves with it.

Whenever one of the underlying figures changes — a new interest rate, a different balance, an updated term — since the result only reflects what is currently in the fields. There is no need to keep a separate record of past results; the web address for a filled-in version already carries the figures used to produce it.

Not unless a tax rate or a fee is explicitly one of the inputs above. Where it is not, the figure shown is a gross calculation, and any tax due depends on your personal circumstances and current tax rules, which are worth checking separately.
