How to calculate fat free mass

Fat free mass is body weight minus fat. Unlike the estimated version derived from height and weight, this uses a measured body fat percentage, so it reflects your actual composition.

The fat free mass index normalises lean mass for height, which is what makes it comparable between people. It is the same idea as BMI, applied only to the tissue that is not fat.

Reading the result

FFMI around 18–20 is typical for untrained men, 22–23 indicates years of serious training, and above 25 is exceptional without pharmaceutical assistance. Female values run roughly 3–4 points lower.

Where this goes wrong. The result is only as good as the body fat figure feeding it. Bioimpedance scales vary by several points with hydration and time of day, and that error passes straight through into FFM.

Almost. Strictly, lean body mass includes the small amount of essential fat within organs and cell membranes, while fat free mass excludes all fat. The difference is a couple of percent and the terms are usually used interchangeably.

For men, 19–21 reflects a well-trained physique and 22–24 an advanced one. Interpret it alongside body fat percentage, since a high FFMI at high body fat mostly reflects size rather than muscle.
